Some of the best remedies come from nature and have been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. One such remedy is kratom - a tree plant that is indigenous to Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and New Guinea and that has been used by its habitants for centuries.

While we don’t know how long exactly kratom has been used in those regions, we know it had to be at least a couple hundred years - it’s only recently that the West has gained interest in it, and more people have started using it in its different forms.

There are different ways to consume it, as it comes in many forms, but one of the most common ones is kratom powder, which is essentially ground kratom leaves. However, for some people, the taste of it is too strong and earthy, so they came up with their own ideas for what to do with kratom powder - and we’ll share some of them below.

How to Take Kratom Powder

The first step in taking kratom powder is to measure how much of it you have to take. The easiest (and most accurate) way of doing it is by using a scale - that way, you know exactly how much you’re using, and you minimize the chances of overdosing on kratom. Just take a teaspoon or a tablespoon, scoop the kratom powder onto it, and put it on a measuring scale.

Why Take Kratom Powder

When you’re just starting on kratom, the powder form is probably the best way to ingest kratom. While it’s powerful, it’s not quite there yet compared to, for example, kratom extract, which is more suitable for experienced users due to its potency. It’s also more versatile than most forms of kratom, as it can be taken in a few different ways.

Kratom Dosage Guide

If you haven’t taken kratom before, you might be confused about what is the right dosage - and the truth is it’s an individual matter, meaning that for each person, it will be different.

There are several things that affect how much kratom you can take, including:

  • Your body weight - If you are of a bigger size, you will need more kratom to achieve the same results as someone of a smaller size.
  • Metabolism - The rate at which your body breaks down substances can affect how it’s absorbed. People with fast metabolism might need a higher dose, while people with slow metabolism don't need as much of it because kratom stays active longer in the body.
  • The strain of the kratom you want to take - Different strains of kratom have different potencies, meaning that taking the same amount will lead to different results.
  • Whether you have eaten before taking kratom - Taking kratom on an empty stomach can lead to more powerful results, meaning you need less kratom to achieve the same effect as a higher dose after food. Keep in mind, however, that if you do plan on eating, it should just be a small snack, don’t take kratom on a full stomach.

Your tolerance level can also have a significant impact on your kratom dosage. Beginners should start with a small dose and slowly make their way up to higher dosages, while experienced users can start with higher amounts.

Finally, the effects you’re going after will also influence what is the right dosage for you. According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, when taken in lower dosages, kratom has more stimulating effects, while when taken in higher dosages, kratom has more of a relaxing and sedative effect.

So, what is a good starting dose for a beginner?

Anywhere from 50 mg to 1 gram should be more than fine. A few days later, you can increase the dose to anywhere between 2 to 4 grams, and then a few days after that, you can start taking an even higher dose, with a dose from 4 to 6 mg being the highest we would recommend you go - your body will gradually get used to kratom, which means you will need a higher dose to reach the same results.

Kratom Powder - How to Take It

As we mentioned before, there are several ways one can take Kratom, and which one will work best for you depends on how tolerant you are to the taste of kratom.

Some people are more sensitive to taste than others, and the earthy taste of it is simply too strong for them. However, they might not want to forfeit the benefits that come from taking kratom, and as a result, they try to find a way to still consume it while making it less noticeable.

So, what are some of the most popular ways of taking kratom?

Toss-and-Wash

This method is good for anyone who doesn’t mind kratom’s earthy taste. It’s pretty straightforward, and the name tells all there is to it. Just to be sure, however, here is how to toss-and-wash your kratom powder:

  • Take your kratom powder and measure how much of it you want to consume.
  • Toss it into the back of your throat.
  • Chase it with a drink - water or your favorite non-carbonated drink will work.

For beginners, it would be a good idea to divide your kratom dosage into two instead of taking it all at once.

Adding Kratom to Beverages

Another popular idea for how to take powder kratom, especially among those who don’t really like the taste, is to drink it by adding it to your favorite drink. The drink's taste will mask kratom. However, you have to keep in mind that not all of the drinks will work well - in some cases, it might be difficult for the kratom powder to dissolve, so it really comes down to testing out which one works best.

Generally, beverages like orange juice, lemonade or mango juice are great options because they’re strong enough to mask the taste of kratom. Avoid drinks that have pulp in them, as kratom powder might not mix well with it.

You can also add kratom powder to fruit smoothies, especially when using sweet kinds of milk like almond milk or vanilla soy milk to make them.

If you are a tea drinker, you can also use your kratom powder to make tea. While kratom leaves would work best for it, kratom powder should be just fine as well.

How do you use kratom powder to make tea? It’s actually pretty simple, here’s how:

  1. Bring the water to a boil. Let it sit for a while, as the water you use to make tea should be hot but not boiling.
  2. Measure the kratom powder dose and add it to a teapot or your mug. Let it sit for about a minute, and once the time is up, mix it well until the powder dissolves.
  3. If you’re using a teapot, pour the tea into a mug. If you prefer tea with no grounds in it (although most of the powder should dissolve after you mix it), you can use a coffee strainer or a coffee filter and pour the tea over it to fish out any residue.

That’s it, your tea is ready.

There is one big advantage to using kratom powder to make tea - you can make the taste almost untraceable by adding sugar, milk, honey, ginger, lemon, or just about anything you love your tea with to make it taste better while still keeping the properties of kratom powder.

Adding Kratom to Food

Similar concept to adding kratom to beverages, when taking kratom with food you just spring a little on your meal - but be careful, don’t bake or cook it, as then it will lose its properties. The perfect option here would be to add it to puddings, oatmeal or yogurt.

Kratom Capsules

Finally, we have kratom capsules. They are one of the most convenient ways of taking kratom, specifically because, thanks to them, you can be sure you’re taking the same dose every time. While you can purchase pre-made kratom capsules, it’s very easy to make your own using refillable capsules and a pack of kratom powder, which makes them the best way to take powdered kratom for anyone who values convenience.

So, how do you take kratom powder capsules? It’s quite simple and similar to taking any medication in a capsule form:

  1. Find the kratom strain and the right amount of capsules for the effect you want to achieve.
  2. Hydrate beforehand, as it will help with the digestion and absorption.
  3. Swallow the capsule with a glass of water or juice.

That’s it. Now you have to wait for the results - usually, it will take about 30 to 60 minutes to start feeling any results, as your body needs to digest the capsule first before it can get to the good stuff.

If you don’t feel anything after an hour, don’t take another capsule right away, as sometimes the effects can be delayed. Instead, try a bigger dose next time, not faster than 12 hours after the last dose.

So, What Is the Best Way to Take Kratom Powder?

There is actually no “best” way to consume kratom powder - every person is different and what one considers the best might not be it for another.

If you’re someone who doesn’t mind the taste of kratom, then you might do well with the toss-and-wash method, as it's quick and simple. If, on the other hand, you prefer a method that would make kratom powder’s taste less noticeable, then adding it to your beverage or your food might be the better option. Finally, if you don’t want to hassle yourself with measuring the right dose of kratom each time, using kratom powder capsules, whether they’re pre-made or homemade, could be the more convenient way of taking kratom.

What Are the Best Kratom Powder Strains?

Just like the dosage and method of administering are an individual matter, so is the best kratom strain. What will be the best for you depends on the desired effect. There are four main strains of kratom, with the main difference between them being the vein color and effect:

  • Red vein kratom works best for those who use kratom as a discomfort reliever or for relaxation.
  • White vein kratom is the better choice for anyone looking for mood enhancement benefits.
  • Yellow vein kratom could be the best choice for anyone just starting out their kratom journey, as it combines both relaxing and mood-enhancing benefits.
  • Green vein kratom is the least intense strain of kratom, which makes it a great choice for anyone who is concerned about taking a dose that is too high or doesn't want to build up a high kratom tolerance.

Each of the strains also has several kratom types classified by origin. For example, there is Red Vein Bali Kratom, White Vein Bali Kratom, Green Vein Bali Kratom and Yellow Vein Bali Kratom - while they are all classified as “Bali Kratom” due to the place of harvest, their effects will vary depending on the vein color.
